I’m usually not a fan of reading books when I have already seen the films and already know the storyline. One of my favourite parts of reading is the suspense and unknown of the storylines.
I decided to pick up The Hunger Games to try and deter me from reading so I could actually do my uni work and not get distracted by binging a whole book (spoiler: it didn’t work)
After watching the films I was sure to be disappointed by the book due to the fact I already knew the story, but I couldn’t have been more wrong!
This book had me hooked from the very start. As a quick recap, in case you don’t know (in which case you must have been living under a rock?!) The Hunger Games follows Katniss, in a dystopian world, where she is forced to fight alongside 23 other tributes, 2 from each of the 12 districts, on a live TV show. They endure awful conditions, fighting for food, water and survival. Only one can survive and they must kill each other to become the victor.
The book offers a much more detailed perspective from Katniss’ point of view that you don’t get from the film! Being able to follow her thoughts every step of the way made this book so intriguing. You really get a sense of what she’s feeling, and the emotions she’s going through while enduring the hunger games conditions.
Alongside this, getting to experience Katniss' and Peeta's relationship develop from her point of view was an aspect I really enjoyed. The book was written so well, with suspense added in all the right places.
I am a lover of dystopian books and find them so interesting to read much like thrillers, and this one was no exception! This is definitely a good one to start with if you're new to dystopian or are still terrified of entering the fantasy realm (like me).
The ending definitely left me in suspense, immediately wanting to read the next book in the series. This book was an easy 5 star read for me. ️️️️️
