22 year-old gymnast Jake Jarman polished off his debut Olympic appearance with a bronze medal in the Men’s Floor Event.
A product of Huntingdon Gymnastics Club – where former Olympian Louis Smith also trained – Jake was one of three new faces in Great Britian’s gymnastics squad.
Paris marked the final Olympic appearance for veteran gymnast Max Whitlock as he announced his retirement from the sport before July, having claimed six medals dating back to London 2012.
Jarman was part of Team GB’s Men’s Team Final squad which finished fourth, just 2.266 points off the USA.
Having performed on the Floor, Vault, Parallel Bars, Horizontal Bar and Pommel Horse, the 22 year-old qualified for the Individual All-around, Men’s Floor and Vault finals.
As the competition wore on, Jarman’s performances improved with an overall 7th place finish in the All-around final; though he scored the highest tally in the vault (15.166) and 14.900 on the floor.
Jake Jarman impressed on the men’s floor final with a score of 14.933. In a tight competition, Jarman secured a bronze medal with his performance only bettered by Israel’s Artem Dolgoyat (14.966) and the Phillipines Carlos Yulo score of 15.
The Peterborough gymnast was delighted with his podium finish: “I’m lost for words to be honest. This medal means everything to me; I’ve had a lot of people in my life that helped me to get where I am today.”
He couldn’t add to his bronze medal on the Floor with a top three finish in the Vault the following day; the discipline which he is current world champion in. A score of 14.933 was only enough for fourth place with teammate Harry Hepworth claiming his first bronze medal with 14.949.
